It's Day 4 of Leslie Saeta's 30 paintings in 30 days challenge, and I have my new fourth painting for you today!

Now, as discussed in my last blog post, I promised I'd mention another source of inspiration  for my Kaleidoscope Paintings and here it is: Aside from Islamic art and architecture, another inspirational source that I draw from are mandalas.

What are mandalas you ask? Well, a mandala is a spiritual symbol  in Hinduism and Buddhism which has radial balance, just like my kaleidoscope drawings. Here are some examples of mandalas below:

Leslie Saeta's 30 Day Painting Challenge: SamDoum's Day 3

It's Day 3 of Leslie Saeta's 30 paintings in 30 days challenge, and I have my new third painting for you today!

Now, as discussed in my last blog post, I promised I'd tell you a little more about where I draw my inspiration from when I draw these kaleidoscope paintings.

Perhaps the greatest inspirational source that I draw from is Islamic art and architecture. As some may know Islam law (for some) forbids animal and human imagery. Thus a lot of Islamic architects, artists, and designers rely heavily on shapes, lines, colors, and geometric forms.

I've been very fortunate to study art history (inclusive of Islamic art history) in both high school as well as in college. My professors would present images on a slide projector, images taken by camera from all places around the globe. And as to where Islamic art is concerned: well, I fell in love with it. The works of Islamic artists are so detailed, elaborate, intricate, ornate, and elegant. Islamic art is beautiful, meticulous, and particular.

Like Islamic artists and designers, I rely heavily with geometric forms and shapes when I draw my Kaleidoscope paintings. But there are other sources that I draw from as well when I do my kaleidoscope paintings. In my next blog post, I'll mention another source of my inspiration  for my Kaleidoscope Paintings. Leslie Saeta's 30 Day Painting Challenge: SamDoum's Day 2

It's Day 2 of Leslie Saeta's 30 painting in 30 days painting challenge and I have my new second painting for you today! This one is pretty cool. I love the greens, reds, and blues.

Now, as discussed in my last blog post, I promised to tell you a little more about where the come from:

Where did they come from? Well, it all started out when I was working as a sales representative, taking inbound calls at a well known company here in Rochester, NY. Sometimes, and especially on Sundays, calls were slow and I would get really bored. And so, if I wasn't reading my Bible on slow days (I did this a lot--It's the greatest book of all time in my opinion), I would just sit at my desk and doodle a little. And over time these drawings became known as "Kaleidoscope" drawings.

Occasionally, someone would come up to my desk and comment on how beautiful the drawings were. And one person even said I should think about selling them. But at that phase of my life I didn't take being an artist seriously, as I only drew and painted as a hobby, for fun.

But now that I have SamDoum Art, well, I'm selling them! (Smiles).

Leslie Saeta's 30 Day Painting Challenge: Day 1

Today is the big day! Day 1 of Leslie Saeta's  30 Day Painting Challenge is finally here! And as promised, I have a new painting!

Well, it's not actually a painting, as it's more like a drawing--drawn in ink. And it's a kaleidoscope drawing! These are so fun to do and they are really one of my favorite things to do! I love drawing them while I'm watching TV or listening to music. They are so relaxing to do and every time I do them, I create something completely new! Each one is something new--something completely different, and unique. I love the collision of the lines, colors, and shapes: all in one place, working together in order to create balance, order, and harmony!

And so, my fellow lovers of art, if you didn't know ahead of time, this is what one of my "Kaleidoscope Paintings" look like. In the next blog post, I'll tell you a little more about where they come from. I hope you enjoy!

Leslie Saeta's 30 Day Painting Challenge

Oh my gosh! Summer is almost over.The fall is almost here, and in a few days, the kids will be going back to school and the last time that I wrote on this blog was almost a year ago to today's date! Crazy! I've been so busy taking care of my three girls and spending time with family that I've neglected my art business. But I'm back, and thanks to Leslie Saeta's 30 day painting challenge, I plan to post, hopefully, everyday for the next thirty days on this blog. I'm hoping Leslie's challenge will help me to get back into the swing of things, back in the studio painting, back to blogging, and back to marketing my art career on social media sites like twitter, and facebook.

So, who is Leslie Saeta, and what exactly is her 30 day painting challenge? Well, not only is Leslie Saeta a great palette knife painter, but she also hosts a podcast that I listen to frequently by the name of "Artists Helping Artists." You can find her podcast on iTunes for free They are really fantastic because these podcasts that Leslie hosts provide free and valuable information for artists on how to sell their art and market it .

I was introduced to the podcast, Artists Helping Artists, by my dad almost two years ago, and after listening to only a few podcasts, I was inspired to start my own art business, and that is how SamDoum Art was born.

Now about that thirty day challenge: Leslie is encouraging artists everywhere to join her in her challenge of painting thirty paintings in 30 days in the month of September. And so, when I at first heard the particular podcast episode where she introduced the challenge, I thought to myself, I have to do it! I could not think of a better way to get back into the swing of things, and to start taking my art career more seriously. Blogging is part of the "Big Three" if you will, as every artist needs a website, a newsletter, and a blog, if they want to sell art: And I learned this from Leslie Saeta.

And so, in the month of September, I will be unveiling a new painting on this blog everyday, for thirty days. So be sure to check back regularly. My theme for the month of September is "Kaleidoscopes in Ink." What are Kaleidoscopes in ink? Well, you'll have to check back at my blog, here on the Blog of SamDoum Art, to see them.

Great News!

Great News!

SamDoum Art is expanding it's horizons and is now offering art prints and originals on Etsy.com! We plan to open up several other webstores on Etsy.com in the future, but the first store "Afroportraits" has already been launched, and already has three art prints uploaded to it!

We plan to not just offer prints on Afroportraits, but we also plan to offer originals as well.

So, yes, only three prints, at this time, have been uploaded to our Afroportraits store. I've just made the new banner for our Afroportraits store in Photoshop and you can take a look at it here (below):

What do you think? Pretty cool, huh? It didn't take that long to make the banner, but I think that I'm satisfied enough with it to keep it for the Afroportraits store. I could change my mind though . . .

The reason why I haven't uploaded anymore than three pieces of at work to our Afroprints store is because I've been busy with my three girls, but my three little ones will be starting school soon, and they will be attending school for half of the day, so that should free up some time to work on more of my artistic projects.

What will I do with all of my free time while the girls are in school?! I'm so excited!

1. I plan to start working out. We have a treadmill in the basement and I have yet to use it (on a regular basis, that is).

2. I plan to work on some of my writing projects, including "Dear Children" which is a book that I've been writing for my three little ones since I was eight weeks pregnant with Miriam and Faith. So far, I think that I've written over 300 pages to them since then. This book, that I am writing them, is not to be published. It's just a book only meant for an audience of three. When it's finished, that is--when the last of my three turns eighteen, I will take it to a printer and have it printed and made to look like a real book. I think it would be an awesome gift to give then when they turn 18. But shhhhh, they don't know about it yet! :)
 
3. I plan to work on more art projects. The area that we live in, here in Pittsford, has a lot of beautiful homes in it's neighborhood, and I think that I could possibly get some commissions to draw some of our neighbors homes for them, if they are interested. I've already drawn one home in our neighborhood. I plan to send the home owners, of the home that I have drawn, a postcard with the painting of their home on the front, and my contact info on the back, should they wish to purchase the painting. I will give them first claim to purchase before anyone else, should they decide to purchase it.

So . . . that's what I plan to do in my free time while the girls are in school . .  . Along with picking up the house, doing laundry, folding clothes, cleaning dishes, cleaning the girls room . . .  the list goes on . . . a mother's work is never done! (Laughs)! But thank God I have a very good husband who helps out with all of the chores! I'm extremely blessed !

As mentioned above, we will be opening up more stores on Etsy.com soon. These will include a  "Landscape" painting store, a "Still Life" painting store, and a "Home Portrait" painting store, among several others.
