It's surprise time! Miriam's new painting!

Miriam's new Tiger Cub Painting

It's surprise time! Well, at least it was yesterday morning for my first born baby girl (the eldest of the twins), Miriam. You see, Miriam has been asking me week after week, "Mommy, when are you going to paint my tiger?" Miriam loves art, as she's something of a fellow artist herself, but the one thing she loves more than art is . . . you guessed it T.I.G.E.R.S.!

A little over a month ago she came downstairs to the basement where my art studio is, and asked me for the first time to paint a tiger for her. So consumed with my current "Englewood Challenge" (A challenge I gave myself in which I plan to paint every house on my street before the end of my three girls academic school year), I kept putting it off. But then she asked me again a few days ago and I could see the love in her eyes that she feels for those tigers, and I reminisced on all the the memories of the tiger books that we've read together and on all the the tiger conversations that we've had. At the young age of six, Miriam is something of an activist, already, speaking on behalf of the tigers, and dreaming up ways in her sweet, young, precious mind of how to save them, especially the white tigers, which are endangered. And not only does she love to learn about them and talk about them, but she loves to draw them, herself.

Now, Miriam is an excellent artist herself, for her age, but she knows that mommy has more years behind her in her experience when it comes to drawing, as her mommy has had more time to develop her talent. So this time she did not want to draw her own tiger, she wanted me to do it. And so, after looking into those two sweet brown eyes, I told her the night before yesterday, "Alright, Miriam, the next painting I paint will be yours. I'm going to paint your tiger tonight!" And she was so excited! And do you know what, yesterday morning, I finally surprised her with it. And not with just one tiger, but with three baby tiger cubs. And she was so excited to have received it!

Now just last night, my mother, her nana, went out and bought a frame for Miriam's new tiger cub painting. And the image you see above is of my beautiful, sweet, little girls happy face holding her new painting in her hands.

This new "Tiger Cub" painting now hangs on the wall opposite of her bed in her bedroom and it's hers to enjoy for as long as she likes.

Below, is a close up of progression of the finished peice. I hope you enjoy, as well:

5th Pittsford Home Portrait in the Pittsford Home Series, Part II

Finished 5th Pittsford Home Portrait in the Pittsford Home Series

Hello fellow art lovers! This is the finished painting of the 5th home in my Pittsford Home Series. I really love how this one came out--and of course, I couldn't resist, I haaaaad to "blue up" the sky. When I took the reference photo for this piece, the sky was a little, well a lot of, cloudy.  And so, I just wanted to make the colors seem more rich and vibrant, so I brightened things up a little. Here, below, is the original photograph.

Reference photo for 5th Pittsford Home Portrait in the Pittsford Home Series
Not too bad 'eh? Came out pretty good, I think. I'm thinking about doing an art show, showcasing all of these homes that I've been painting and inviting my neighbors (whom these home belong to). I think it would be so cool for all of them to see all the homes on our street, painted, and showcased on the walls of one place, during an art show. I'm also thinking about doing a calendar titled 'The Pittsford Home Series: Englewood Hill' (the name of our street).

All that being said, and switching gears, in my next post, I have a bit of a surprise. For one person, I should say. I've painted something really special for someone that I love very much and tomorrow, in my next post, I will unveil that painting . . . so stay tuned. Until then, 'til later fellow art lovers! May God continue to bless you and I hope that you have a wonderful rest of the day! :) Enjoy!

2nd Pittsford Home Portrait in the Pittsford Home Series, Part II

Hello all:

Just wanted to post this Friday morning in order to show you an update on how my second home portrait in my Pittrsford Home Series is going. Please see below:

"2nd Pittsford Home Portrait" in the "Pittsford Home Series" (Unfinished)

Photo the I am using as a reference for above painting
As you can see, I still have quite a bit of work ahead of me, but not too much, hopefully. I've still got to clean up some of the smudges and the line-work, as some of the line-work is too thick.

This paining should be finished soon, I hope. When it's finished I will post the final result.

Well, that's all for now. 'Til later fellow art lovers!

Hello all:

It's Monday, and so begins another work week for many. But I hope to brighten up your day with another one of my paintings which is in my "Pittsford Home Series". This one isn't quite finished yet, but I still wanted to post the progress so that you could see how things are coming along. The first image is a blocked out drawing of some of the lines and shapes of the composition. The second image is the most recent update on how this painting is going. The Drawing Process: A Home in Pittsford, NY Part III

Hello everyone and happy Sunday!

As promised in my last blog post, I have the finished first painting in my Pittsford Home series for you today. I think it came out pretty good, though it looks a 'lil better in person than on the computer. Anyway here it is . . .
"1st Pittsford Home Portrait" in the "Pittsford Home Series"

As you can, see from yesterdays drawing (see below) I've added a bit more detail in the landscaping including flowers, flower pots and other knicknacks. The sky is also a little bluer in the drawing above.
Previous drawing of a Pittsford Home

That said, I've recently started the second home in my Pittsford Home Series and I will be sharing a post on how that painting is coming out tomorrow in my next post. Until then, I hope you enjoy! 'Til later fellow art lovers!

The Painting Process: A Home in Pittsford, NY : Part II

Hello All! Hope everyone is having a great day. I sure am.

Although yesterday I had been continuing to work on the first home in my "Pittsford Home" series, I did not post for that day. So here is an update on the progress that I have made on that home portrait that I told you about in my last blog post. Image 1 is the actual photograph that I took--the photograph of which I will be using as a reference to complete my drawing. Below image "1," you'll find several images that reflect my step by step process and progress of drawing this particular home in pastel. I hope you enjoy! :)

Image 1: Photo of a Pittsford Home

Image 2: Blocking out the lines and shapes of the drawing

Image 3: Laying out some basic colors and details

Image 4: Laying out more basic color and details

Image 5: Laying out more color, adding more details, and creating highlights and Shadows

Image 6: Adding more highlights and shadows and coloring the blue sky
I'm still not finished with this pastel painting yet. I'd like to add more details, if I can. Pastel is such a soft medium that at times, when working with a small scale piece (this piece is only 8"x10"), it can be difficult to get the hard crisp lines that are necessary for detail. I love the soft feeling/look that pastels create but it does have its limitations.

Anyway, that's all from SamDoum Art. In my next blog post, I 'll show you the completed painting. Until then, 'til later fellow art lovers and enjoy!

The Painting Process: A Home in Pittford, NY

Hello everyone!

Leslie Saeta's 30 day painting challenge is over and after a much needed short break I'm back to painting and drawing. Yep, I'm back in the studio and I've been working on a series of drawings of some of my neighbors homes here in Pittsford, NY. Today's piece is a work in progress and it is a painting drawn in pastel. This is the photo that I am using for inspiration:

Photo of a home in Pittsford, NY
And here is a blocked out drawing/layout of the basic forms, lines, and shapes of my neighbor's home. Tomorrow, I will be blocking out the basic colors.

Sketch of my Neighbors Home (Unfinished)

I know that sometimes artists and non artists alike, like to see the creative process of an art piece. They wonder "how it is that you do what you do?": Well, I'll answer that question for you--that is, I will be taking you step by step in my creative process while I work on this particular piece. So stay tuned for my next blog post! Until then, 'til later fellow art lovers!

Leslie Saeta's 30 Day Painting Challenge: SamDoum's Day 30

It's Day 30 of Leslie Saeta's 30 paintings in 30 days challenge, and I have my new 30th Kaleidoscope in Ink painting for you today!

Today is the last day of the challenge! Yippee! Hooray! I did it! 30 days of kaleidoscope in Ink paintings and I haven't missed a single day! I'm proud of myself and I'm also proud of all the other artists who've participated in the challenge. It hasn't been easy, but it's been a lot of fun. Thanks so much to everyone who has been following my blog during the challenge. I have really appreciated all of your support.

In day 30's kaleidoscope in ink, I've returned back to basics (no rectangular composition this time), but I think I'll take a 'lil break from doing kaleidoscopes for now. I have a couple other new art projects that I'll be working on, including illustrating a children's book that I've recently written.

I probably won't be posting on this blog every day from now on, but I hope to post at least 3/4 times a week instead. My three little girls are all attending school now, so that frees up a lot more time for me so that I can finally get some painting time in. Oh, and by the way check these photos out:

The Doumnande Girls go Back to School
They are so cute aren't they? Yep, all three are in school now. Sephie started kindergarten this September and the twins (Miriam and Faith) have started first grade. We are all so proud of them! :) Well, that's all from SamDoum Art, take care a God bless you!
